Notice in the first photo of these Goldfinches the bird in the back appears to have 3 parts to his bill. Caught him right as he grabbed up a seed. Monday I posted Eastern Bluebirds, one photo showed the Bluebird at the frozen birdbath. The blue dish is what I put water in when all of the birdbath's water are frozen.
When the water in this dish freezes I just dump it out and fill again.

That birds mouth does look three parted!! Enlarge and you can really see it.
What neat pictures. I really like the goldfinch.
Aren't they just precious??? I've seen alot of goldfinches lately myself--along with my huge batch of Siskins!!!! I do what you do---put out new water when it's cold/freezing. They do need the water. My Chickadees absolutely love the fresh water. It's as if they watch me coming!!!

Betsy
Great photos, finches are fun.
I had a couple of goldfinches today. They were pretty skittish. Thanks for sharing these cuties.
I love the little goldfinches!
Leedra: It is amazing the difference between the summer and winter colors.
I loved the triple beak shot! You sure did capture that goldfinch at the right moment to get that!
Really cute actions shots, Leedra. Even though I don't get American Goldfinches at my feeders, I enjoy their cousins, the Lesser Goldfinches.
Mary C - You brought out my reference book. Had never heard of the Lesser Goldfinch. According to my book the American Goldfinch covers all of The United States, so check closely when you have a visitor especially during the winter. You might have a surprise visitor.
Great photos of these guys, Leedra!
