Great Blue Heron in flight at Lake Seminole Park

The Great Blue Heron were already building their nest in mid February at Lake Seminole Park. This Great Blue Heron took flight and I almost missed it.

I love the shot when he was beginning to land.
He did not stay on the old tree long. He went into a tree right above him. At this location I could not see the nest (if there was one) due to the curve around the pond and this area is fenced off. Notice his foot, he is fixing to take off into the tree. It was almost as if he just jumped up into the tree.

Great heron photos! They are such hard birds for me to photograpy. Love the wing span on them.

Hi Leedra,
I apologize it has taken me so long to get over here from your kind comments on my Florida blog. I've perused through some past posts and can see we are kindred in our love of birds and photography of all things in nature.

The Great Blue Heron is one of my favorites. They are not shy and will walk along the same shoreline with us humans.

Love your 'flight' photos.

You might be interested in this post where I caught one eating a fish when we were at Captiva Island last year.

How fun! I have yet to get a good picture of a great blue... I've seen them several times, but they play hide and seek with me or are flying and those are still hit or miss for me.

These are great pictures, especially of the heron in flight (or landing).

You captured the heron quite well. I like both the flying shots and the one where he is posing.

These are wonderful and show their beautiful wings so well! I wish I could get good flight shots. I'm too slow and never get focused.

Mary - The flight photos were alot easier with the old manual focus 35mm cameras. It is getting a little better, but as Red commented it seems to be hit or miss. Sure don't have time to set it at manual, and manual is harder with the digital camera. Don't use manual very much, and not on action at all.
