I was so excited to see the Brown Headed Nuthatch
in the yard at Rockwood during the snow in January 2009.
But when he was still there in March I really was pleased.
I hope he decides to stay with us.
The reference books indicate Rockwood is just barely in his area.
The male and female look the same.
All 3 of these photos were taken March 9. Wednesday I went to Veterans Park in Spring City, and had another pleasant surprise, they were getting started building their nest in one of the box birdhouses. The box was a standard bluebird box, but higher off the ground than the bluebirds prefer. So yesterday I made another trip to Walmart for another new bluebird house. When I go back to Rockwood tomorrow we will be putting up the 2nd bluebird house this week. I will take either one that decides to use them.

What a pretty bird. I hope it decides to stay in your area. What a treat!
Great photo that first one. I do hope they hang around for you.
I see from blogs there are a few different colors of Nuthatch birds, I will need to investigate. This is the first brown one I've seen.
Great photo.
Beautiful bird. Good luck with the bird house.
Recently we put up a bluebird house too! So far nothing but we do have blue birds that visit our yard so we are hopeful!
Great pictures, Leedra. I also hope he decides to stay with you.
Jen - This one you probably will not see at your house. The map in the reference book shows to north Georgia, but on into Tennessee just through what is called the Tennessee Valley area. It does say "accidentail north to Wisconsin, Ohio and New Jersey". So if you do get to see one grab that camera. The first one I saw I had to pour over the book and then I thought it was just an accidental, that is why I have been so excited about they are in the yard at Rockwood. I have never seen one when I lived in Knoxville or at home now.
Susie - the bluebirds will nest if you have it in the right location. They don't want the opening too close to trees, but it can back up to trees. They like to be able to sit and see that box real good. We currently have 4 on our 2 acres and our neighbor has at least that many on his 3 acres, all were used last year either by the Bluebirds or Tree Swallows. Either one is fine with me. We had plenty of babies of both.
Nope---we don't have the Brown-headed Nuthatch up here. They are gorgeous birds though. Glad you saw one in Rockwood.
Hugs,
Betsy
Good luck. These are cute little birds.
Blessings,Ruth
It's good to see this bird. I had not seen one before!
This is on my "Must-see" list! I hope I can see one in August when I am in the GSMs. Thanks for sharing.
