Brown Headed Nuthatch at Veterans Park

I thought this Brown Head Nuthatch was building his nest
in this birdhouse at Veterans Park in Spring City.

But now I am thinking maybe he was taking the nesting material to another location to build his nest. Or maybe he was cleaning out the birdhouse because he was going to use it. Either way it does appear he was taking something out, not bringing it in.

I like the way he looked straight at me, then gave me his profile again.
I will try to keep an eye on this box.

I agree that it looks as if he's taking things out rather than putting them in. In either case, I like the pictures.

Great pictures, Leedra. Yes, he obviously is either cleaning out the nest to use it, or he is stealing the stuff inside to make a nest somewhere else. Do Nuthatches nest in nest-boxes???? My book says they nest in a natural cavity or abandoned woodpecker nest.

Hugs,
Betsy

Betsy - I had to get back to my reference book to read what it did say..this is from the Stokes Field Guide to Birds "nest of bark strips, grasses, hair, feathers, and cotton, placed in birdhouse or excavated cavity in tree, post, stump, 2-50 ft above ground."
