Blue Jay enjoying a treat

I have been seeing other people taking pine cones and adding peanut butter and then seeds. I don't have any pine cones, but I have this tree in the Rockwood backyard that has real rough bark. So I decided to smear some peanut butter and add seeds. Did this a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get to stay to see what happened.
When I returned to Rockwood all the seeds and the peanut butter was gone. So were all the seeds in the feeders. After refilling the feeders I didn't have any seeds left. So I just smeared peanut butter. Didn't take long until the Carolina Wrens showed up and started in on the peanut butter, they didn't seem to mind at all the seeds were not there.
The following day I added the seeds, and here came the Blue Jays. My intend was to bring the Red Bellied Woodpeckers down to eye level so I could get a good look at them. Hey, I am not picky, I like Blue Jays. And the Carolina Wren was another first for me, yes I have led a very sheltered birding life.
I don't know if he is showing me his prize, or telling me I can't have any.

That bluejay looks healthy and is beautiful. I'm not picky either when it comes to which birds come to the feeder. WELL---I didn't much care for those Starlings--but luckily, they are gone.

Have a great weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy

You got great pictures of the bluejay. I guess Betsy isn't the only one that likes peanut butter!

This is a good idea! Will have to try it! Love the Blue Jay shots. Mine usually flies away before I get good photos.

I keep thinking of doing something similar but have yet to actually do it. Nice shots! :)

I love your idea, Leedra. But if I tried it on any of our trees the squirrels would be the only ones pigging out. Even though we don't get the Carolina wrens or the blue jays, we do get western scrub jays and they love peanuts, too. So, I'm sure they would love the peanut butter, but it would be the squirrels to say "mine! all mine!" ;o)

You may not have gotten the red bellied woodpecker, but the Blue Jay sure loves the peanut butter. He is really enjoying the peanut butter. What a great idea.
