White Tailed Deer in the snow at Cades Cove

These photographs were taken March 8, 2008 at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains National Park. I used the first photograph for January on the calendar I made for my mother this year.
The 2nd photograph is actually my favorite of the day.

There were several deer and I was quite close to them. The deer in Cades Cove are very tame. Think they would have stayed around for more great photos but off in the distance first a car door, then a dog barked. All the deer took off through the woods and that was the end of the photos for me. I am a firm believer dogs should not be allowed in the park, and this was just an example of why.
There probably is snow in Cades Cove this morning, but it is too cold for me. I am not going, plus my Blazer is in Rockwood, would not go up there with the possibility of snow without my 4X4. Getting it back this weekend. Might go next week, if it would just warm up just a little.

Leedra,
Don't you just love when you can get this close to one of these creatures! That second picture of one tilting it's head up to get food is really good. You did a wonderful job with these photos...love the close ups..such eyes..hmmm..look how long those lashes are in that last pic!
great post!!

Leedra: Loved the second shot with the snow on the deer's head. That was coming down pretty good or it shook the snow from the tree.
We hit -10F this morning and will be 0F by noon.

Awesome shots!

I so envy your ability to visit Cades Cove so frequently. It is such a beautiful place. I like visiting vicariously through you.

It was REALLY cold when I go off a little after midnight last night. By the time I got up (around 10) the offical was 9 for Knoxville. Here it can be colder than Knoxville by about 5 degress usually, don't know what it was at daybreak in Knoxville. But it is alot colder than we are used to. Everybody said the heavy nut crops this year meant a bad winter. We just have not had the snow to go with the cold weather. We have had so many mild winters I guess we got used to them.

Great series. I always wonder how the deer find enough to eat in the winter.

An excellent series. I would like to see Cades Cove in winter without having to drive there at that time of year.

I love the second one but that last one with the way he is looking at you is really cool also!
