American Goldfinch feeding

The American Goldfinch do seem to like this feeding location. I place the water there when the birdbath freezes.
Well, they have a visitor. Trusty ole House Finch has come to visit.
Look how much larger the House Finch is than the Goldfinch.

It's neat to see the house and gold finches side by side like that to put their differences into perspective. I like the goldfinches' drap winter clothes.

How fun! I just love them! We don't have too many goldfinches around here in the winter but the house finches stay. :)

They all look happy - you are treating them well!

I think I like the Goldfinches in the winter better then summer. Great pictures.

Richard - I think I agree. There is something prettier about the softer color.

Your pictures are very good as usual, Leedra. Thanks for including the photos of both finches to enable a comparison for us novices to birdwatching.

Leedra,

Love the finches! I am still working on my feeders at home and trying to attach some birds outside the window. Right now I still have to go hunting mine!

Thank you so much for helping me discover a new bird for me. I never even knew there was such a thing as a Boat-Tailed Grackle! Here I am photographing them! I always feel so stupid when I mess these up! But hey, that is how I learn I guess.

Thanks again,
Craig

Beautiful Leedra. The Goldfinches are so pretty this time of year -and so are OUR MANY Pine Siskins. I have only seen just a few House Finches here--at least at my feeders. They are supposed to be 'common' birds--but for some reason, I don't seem to have them. They are alot larger, aren't they???
Hugs,
Betsy

Good Morning Leedra,
Your pictures of the birds are beautiful, as usual! I loke to see the different kinds feeding together!

Craig Glenn - I am still working on them here at home, I don't have enough trees of any size. Our 2 acres was a pasture before we bought it. There is a great tree line at the very front but by the time I walk down there all the birds are gone- that was why I asked for a blind to sit in. That way they will come back. The "home away from home" is a different story. Lots of trees, and lots of birds, mostly in the tops of those OLD trees. There I am trying to bring them down to eye level, so I have started feeding them there too, although they seem to have been doing fine without me.

As to the id, I understand about wanting to be right. If you looked at my post of this bird you saw I was wrong to begin with too. I said it was a Rusty Blackbird, but this is how we learn new birds. Now when you get a good look at one you will be able to tell the difference in 2 birds in your local area. The more you see them the easier the id is made.

Betsy - I don't have any Pine Siskins, so close to each other, but so different in what comes to visit. You haven't snuck down to Rockwood and captured my Waxwing have you?

So nice that you take such good care of your feathered friends--no wonder they don't mind posing for you. :)

The birds in your area know which resturant serves the best food.:)
The fich looks like an over grown kid next to the Godfiches.

Neat post. I like the size comparison thing as it gives me trouble in the field. Seen by itself no way could I see a house finch was that much bigger.

The goldfinch are cute! I enjoy watching them and it won't be long until those males become bright yellow. My sister is from NC and she says just when they BEGIN to turn...they LEAVE! I'm glad they breed here in PA!
I think they like your set up and it makes for lots of nice pictures!
