Copperhead in Cades Cove

This Copperhead was between the logs of the smokehouse in the Cable Mill area of Cades Cove. After I photographed this snake we walked around some more, and as we came back I saw a man right up at the logs peeping between the cracks. He was one log down and about 6 inches to the left of this snake. I showed him where the snake was, to try to keep him from being bitten. The sign is in the doorway of the smokehouse.

Hello,
You've got some great snake pictures here, but I just wanted to let you know that all the snakes you've shown from the Cades Cove Mill Area are actually harmless Northern Water Snakes (Nerodia sipedon). Because of their brown color and pattern, they are often confused with copperheads and unfortunately killed. Thanks for not hurting these snakes! I've been to Cades Cove a lot (I live in Knoxville) and I am an avid "herper" so I spend most of my free time looking for reptiles. I've seen many Northern water snakes (probably over 40) in Cades Cove but I've only seen one Copperhead. That should give you some idea of the relative abundance of sightings of each snake. There are copperheads in Cades Cove, though, so it's always smart to keep your eyes open.
