I am not exactly sure which bird this is.
I did eliminate the Bittern, because he is not brown.

From a distance I told Jimmy it was a Green Heron.
But when I saw that LONG neck I decided it was not,
but the body is so small compared to the neck.
Sorry that the photos are not better.
The light was bad, and there was a chain link
fence between us, although the bird is not captive.

My reference book is the Sibley Guide to Birds, page 64,
best I can tell Ninth Printing (pages could vary).

What does everybody out there think it is?

I wish I knew my birds better so I don't have a clue. But that is one long neck!
My first guess was a green Heron, that's what it looks like to me.
I just checked my Audubon book and it definitely looks like a green heron to me. The eye striped match as do the white stripes down the wings, these are different from the Bittern.
So that's my vote.
The neck sure does not look normal, does it? But these are still pretty darn good pictures...I would be happy if I had taken them.
Great shots, Leedra. I also think it is a Green Heron. They have a habit of pulling their necks down, which can make it appear either long or short.
I think it is a Green Heron. Maybe his body will grow and catch up with that neck!
I won't make a guess,but I do like the pictures.
It is frustrating when a bird is hard to identify.

The green heron just doesn't stretch out his neck as often as the other herons, I'm not sure why, but the long neck is there. :) Beautiful!!!
Seeing his feet through the water is rather fun! Makes for a unique photo.
Birding was so much fun in Florida. Looks like you had a great time!
Don't know much about shore birds, but I do love the photographs.
Looks like a first summer Green Heron..beautiful photos.
