Henry Whitehead Place in Cades Cove

This is the Henry Whitehead Place in Cades Cove. I have been to Cades Cove fairly often for the last 37 years, and do not remember ever going by this home place before. We decided to go down Forge Creek Road, which is just a side road, to see what the scenery was like. Never expected a cabin.Notice how 2 separate cabins are right next to each other.
They even share the same gutter. Notice somebody wrote on it. I do not understand why people visiting such a place as the GSMNP would do this.This smokehouse looks about the same as the one at the Cable Mill area where the Copperheads were. We had not yet seen the Copperheads at this time.

Notice how much smalerl in height the back cabin is. The door was too short to go into without bending down, and the ceiling was just above our heads. At least it would stay warmer. Good in the winter, bad in the summer.

Can even look through the front door all the way in to the back cabin.

One last glance before we traveled on down the road.

The front cabin has a brick fireplace, the back cabin has the old stone fireplace. Could possibly be the front fireplace has been replaced by the national park.

Fawn and Mama in Cades Cove

A Mother Deer and her Fawn. We just moseyed along together until they reached the edge of the woods and then I turned back. These photographs are in the order taken.

The landscape of Cades Cove

The first 6 photographs are on the trail to the "Wet Bottoms". Was suppose to be .2 of a mile. After about a mile, and we had sorta gone in a large U, we cut back across the field to the road. I sat on a large rock and my husband went back for the vehicle.
This area was where we saw the Common Wood Nymph in an earlier post of Cades Cove.

Not hidden very well.

But he can dance fairly well.

This creek is one of my favorite places.

It looks so different everytime I am there. The underbrush has really grown since I was there in March. Almost can't get around the edge. Can understand why the parks have control burns.

Notice here the water is 'milky', Not sure why. We had not seen the Copperheads at this point, not sure I would have been walking around in this area if I had.

This was taken at the same place as the bottom photograph. Just seeing if I could actually get a picture of the fish under water. Think the shade probably helped.

This was after we had seen the Copperheads, and we were just up from the mill building. This path is beside the water feeding to the mill wheel. Had to go back here to take photos of each other. The first photos my husband and I ever took of each other were to my back about 50 ft, during my 'film' days. No I don't have a scanner so I cannot share those photos with you.

8 Point Buck in Cades Cove

The first post today has the 6 point buck on the right side of the road. When he took off he was over both fences in a flash. The 8 point, which I did not get to photograph on the right side of the road, only jumped one of the fence and then stopped in the road for a drink.He looks toward the other buck.
He then jumps the fence too, which I did NOT capture.

Stops to look at me.

Then sticks his tongue out at me.

And he is gone.

Buck in Cades Cove in the spring

I took this photograph the first weekend of March. Very close to the same spot I took the 6 point buck posted earlier today. Do you think it is the same deer?

6 Point Buck in Cades Cove

We had just come around a curve in the road just past where I photographed several deer in March this year when we came across 2 bucks in field right at the road.At least 10 people are standing in the curve of the road with cameras in hand.
The 2 bucks could care less. I walked back up away from the curve, and closer to the smaller of the 2 bucks.

Something has grabbed his attention.

Think possibly a motorcyle, or louder vehicle came by.

I think he is going to settle back down.

But then he turns totally around.

And slowly starts away.

Then he jumps the fence, crosses the road and jumps the other fence.

His photograhpic session was over. But his buddy will be in the 3rd post today.

Butterfly or Moth - Question Mark

OK, which is it? Butterfly or moth? That was the question for quite a while, but on September 7, Hap from New Hope has identified it as a Question Mark butterfly. Thank you Hap. I am reposting this one now that I know what it is. Isn't it neat that it ends out to be named Question Mark after it was in question for so long. I am also posting right in the middle of my Cades Cove series, but this was taken on the my neighbor's porch rail, not is Cades Cove.

Posting from a dialup circuit

I am still posting photographs from a dialup circuit. No ADSL available at my house.

Cable DSL? Boy, that is a joke too. I watch TV using a high definition antenna. It is great, on the few channels it gets me. I do have a flat screen TV, so the viewing is great, just local. I get what is in the air to get.

Just saying all this to say. I have made an attempt to upload my photos using a larger setting in my cropping, and then in blogger. The photographs are larger. But it is getting really time consuming because of the dial up. So, that said, I am going to go back to the smaller version. They just load SO MUCH FASTER. This past week while trying to post all these Cades Cove photos it seems all I have accomplished is sitting in front of the computer. Preparing for not having access to my photo computer much for the next several weeks I have already got post ready. They will post automatically at the times I have set, and I will still be able to visit all of you. You randomly may see the larger photos due to the post I have already loaded.

I hope the smaller photos will not keep you away, I really enjoy the visits in both directions.

Common Wood Nymph

This is my first Common Wood Nymph. Notice how he just blends in with the environment.He moved along the trail with us for about 50 ft, then I lost sight of him.
Took me a while to figure this one out, but hopefully I got it correct.

I know birders have a lifer list.

But I have a butterfly photographed lifer list. And even if I have the name wrong, it is still a first for me. Hap can probably tell me if I am correct with the name. Remember this was in the GSMNP, some of the options I found were only out west, which eliminated them from the choice.

I actually have a photograph of each butterfly and add a magnet and have them together on the door going out to the sunroom. My husband looked at it last weekend and commented on how it had grown this year. I still need to get some of them on the 'board'. Maybe at the end of this session I will photograph the door and post that.
